Cremating a loved one's body during their cremation services in Zionsville, IN will only take a couple of hours in most cases. But the entire cremation process will take a little bit longer than that to play out. If you haven't ever planned a cremation for a loved one before, you might not be familiar with the cremation process and all that it entails. We're going to break it down for you today so that you know what to expect from it. Here are the steps that will take place during the cremation process.

Step 1: A person's body is identified.

At the beginning of the crematory process , a funeral home will kick things off by properly identifying a person's body. This part of the process will obviously be very important because a funeral home needs to make sure they're cremating the right person once things get underway. Most funeral homes will double-check and even triple-check a person's identity before proceeding. They'll also touch base with a person's family and ask them to come in to ID them and sign off on their Zionsville, IN cremation taking place.

Step 2: A person's body is prepared for cremation.

After a person's body has been identified and their family has signed off on their cremation, a funeral home will begin preparing their body for cremation. To do this, they'll remove any medical devices and metal from their body. They'll also put them into whatever clothing their family chose. And they'll finish things off by placing a person's body into a combustible cremation container so that it can be easily moved into a cremation chamber.

Step 3: A person's body is cremated.

When a person's body is all ready to go, a funeral home will move it into a cremation chamber. This cremation chamber will typically be anywhere from about 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit all the way up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. From there, the only thing left for a funeral home to do will be to sit and wait for a person's body to be completely cremated. It usually will only take a couple of hours for a cremation to be over and done with. But if a person was on either the taller or heavier side, it might take a little longer for their cremation to be carried out.

Step 4: A person's remains are processed.

Once a person's body has been cremated, a funeral home will retrieve their remains from a cremation chamber. These remains will then be processed so that they're broken down into very small pieces that are all uniform in size. The remains will then be put inside a cremation urn or a small cardboard box and given back to a person's family. It'll then be up to their family to figure out what they would like to do with the remains next.
