Advice on What to Wear to Funeral Services

May 8, 2023

Choosing what to wear to Indianapolis, IN funeral services used to be pretty easy for most people. Men would put on their nicest black suits for funeral services, while women would throw on their nicest black dresses. But over time, the dress codes for funeral services have loosened, which has given people more freedom when picking out which outfits to wear to funeral homes. It's also made it more challenging for some people to decide what to put on. Here is some advice on what you should wear when you're getting ready to go to funeral services.

When in doubt, wear black.

Wearing black to a funeral home in Indianapolis, IN is no longer required. But that doesn't mean that you can't still do it. In fact, if you're having a hard time deciding what to wear to a funeral home, there is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing a black suit or black dress. Even though wearing all black to a funeral home isn't for everyone anymore, there are still plenty of people who do it so you'll blend right into the crowd.

Choose darker colors if you don't want to wear black.

Just because you don't have to wear black to funeral homes anymore doesn't mean you should just wear whatever color you want. You should still try to shy away from wearing any colors that are going to be too bright. That will mean leaving colors like red, blue, yellow, orange, etc. at home in the closet. If you're not going to wear black, you should aim to wear colors like navy, gray, brown, etc. Anything that is on the darker end of the spectrum will be a fantastic fit for a funeral home.

Avoid wearing anything with busy patterns.

In addition to steering clear of wearing bright colors to funeral services, you'll also want to avoid wearing anything that has busy patterns on it. If you find yourself being tempted to wear a shirt with polka dots on it or a dress with stripes, you should think again and leave outfits like this at home. These kinds of patterns might distract people when you wear them inside a funeral home. It could prevent them from being able to focus on paying their respects to the deceased.

Dress as modestly as you can for funeral services.

Generally speaking, the name of the game when getting dressed up for funeral services will be trying to blend in versus standing out. This will mean dressing as modestly as you can. Men should still try not to wear shorts and should stick to slacks or some other kind of dress pants. Women can wear dresses, but they shouldn't be too short or too revealing. By dressing modestly, you can avoid creating any distractions at a funeral home. It's one more thing to remember when choosing an outfit for funeral services.
