Subbayya Maddali

October 6, 1922 — November 8, 2021

The man is a success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who leaves the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul; who never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had. – Robert Louis Stevenson

Subbayya Maddali epitomized the successful man, as defined by Stevenson. A man of towering intellect, infinite curiousity, insatiable appetite for knowledge, extraordinary compassion that extended to all forms of divine creation, and an enlightened teacher.

Mr. Maddali was a seeker of eternal truths, an aficionado of Carnatic music, a writing prodigy, a yoga master, and a man who set the benchmarks for excellence in everything that he said or did. A man whose eyes radiated effulgent love for family and for life, and whose smile reflected an impish sense of humor.

A man who leaves this world in a much better place; a man whose legacy lives on with his magnum opus on Sri Thyagaraja, and in the lives of the legions of family members, friends, and colleagues whose lives he transformed forever.

He is survived by three children, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held privately.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy .

Heaven is surely celebrating even as the world says with teary eyes -  “Thank you and Farewell MVS!”
