Phyllis Jean "PJ" Schwartz

d. September 21, 2022

Indianapolis

Phyllis Jean “PJ” Schwartz passed away on September 21, 2022 at the young age of 93.  She was a beautiful woman with sparkly blue/green eyes, full of personality and grace. She was a kind, dignified and unpretentious person who was and will always be dearly loved by all who had the privilege and pleasure to know her.

PJ was a Hoosier almost her entire life.  She attended college at Indiana University, majoring in music---piano was her instrument of choice.  PJ met the first love of her life, Bob Schwartz, at IU.  They married in 1949 and were blessed to share 61 cherished years in both sickness and health.  They raised their three (almost) perfect children Mark, Dee Dee (Alvin), and Wendy (Lynn); travelled to many parts of the world; enjoyed working out at the JCC, playing tennis, bridge, and golf (which PJ took up later in life and to be honest her “Bobby” did not enjoy golf as much after that because PJ was a quick learner and a better athlete).  They were devoted parents, grandparents, and great grandparents.  Phyllis treasured her role as Grammy to Erin (Brent), Jordyn (Dan), Rachel, and Leah (Matt) and kvelled over great grandchildren Evan, Madison, Kennedy, Ezra, Bryce, Audrey, Wes, and Aoife.

PJ was kind, thoughtful, intelligent, and spunky with a quick wit and great sense of humor.  She could light up a room with her gracious personality and natural beauty.  PJ’s top notch listening skills and caring demeanor made her a wonderful friend to many throughout her life.

When Phyllis lost her husband Bob after lovingly caring for him during his illness for over 3 years, she did not retreat from life; rather she embraced the blessings of family and friends supported by the memories and strong foundation created during the marriage.  Phyllis became active in the senior living community (Marquette) to which she moved.  She hit the gym every day of the week, then sat with friends sipping their morning coffee and engaging in lively discussions.  PJ loved attending and supporting the Indianapolis Symphony and engaged in many other activities offered at Marquette both on and off campus.  PJ volunteered at the community gift shop and as an ambassador at Marquette introducing new residents to the people and amenities.  PJ neither looked for nor expected to find another love relationship after losing Bob.  However, 7 years ago a new resident (Lee) moved into Marquette; he had to have been heaven-sent.  Lee became her “Love” and she his “Love”.  And that has been a beautiful thing.  Lee is embraced by PJ’s entire family and is known as “Grate Lee” to the grandkids.  As much as PJ wanted to leave her body that was failing her, she had a hard time letting go of the beautiful life she and Lee made together; “irregardless”, may she rest in peace!

Funeral services will be held at Aaron Ruben Nelson Mortuary, 11411 North Michigan Road, on Friday, September 23rd at 1 PM.  Burial will follow in Congregation Beth-El Zedeck North Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the World Central Kitchen , Indianapolis Symphony or the donor’s favorite charity.
