John’s keen eye, insatiable curiosity and fondness for the unusual served him well in his 71 years of life. John was the Pathology Service Chief at the Richard L. Roudebush VAMC for a decade. He then became the Nordschow Professor of Laboratory Medicine and served for 24 years as Chairman of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he has been a faculty member for more than 40 years.

He held the position of editor-in-chief of the Journal of Urologic Pathology from 1997-2000, and was the editor-in-chief of Modern Pathology from 2000-2020, the latter of which received the Gold Medal of the International Academy of Pathology in 2006 for outstanding contributions to international pathology and education and research.

John died as he lived, with integrity, compassion and the admiration of those who knew him.

John is survived by his wife, Julie (Lindsley) Eble; sons, Nicholas John (Rachel) Eble and Benjamin Keith (Barbara) Eble; daughter Elizabeth Eble (Geoff) Gardner; grandchildren Lance, Otto and Eleanor Eble, Kathryn and Graham Gardner, and Magan Snow; Megan Lindsley and Matthew Lindsley; and his brother, Mark David (Patty) Eble and sister, Elizabeth Eble (Richard) Engelhardt as well as beloved nieces and nephews.
