John David Currier, Sr

John David Currier, Sr., age 81, of Plainfield, IN died May 17, 2021.  He was born December 9, 1939, in Rockford, IL, to Laurence Jenks and Ruth Denny Currier, who preceded him in death.  He married Janet Geiger on March 30, 1968; she survives him as do son John, Jr. of Waukee, IA and Mary (Keith Ramsey) Currier-Ramsey of Indianapolis, and grandchildren Adeline, John III, and Eleanor Currier and Aiden and Alexander Ramsey.  His brother Denny preceded him in death.  Surviving in-laws are Nancee Currier of Marietta, GA, Lawrence Geiger, Jr. or St. Petersburg, FL, and Jill (Dale) Olson of Bloomington, IL.  Other survivors include one niece, eight nephews, and many relatives and friends.

John, a graduate of Rockford West High ‘57 and Rockford College ‘61, also attended Wabash College and NIU.  He worked as an administrator in two retirement communities:  Wesley Willows in Rockford and The Holmstad in Batavia, IL.  He loved the residents.  His career also included sales, personnel, marketing, purchasing, and accounting in Rockford industry.

John served as moderator, deacon, Sunday School teacher, and basketball coach at Second Congregational Church in Rockford.  In Kiwanis, he was a scholarship chairman; in Jaycees, a vice-president, and he volunteered with Rockford Community Chest, American Red Cross, and Rockford College Alumni.

John loved playing golf, from high school and college teams, to area tournaments - winning some - and especially to playing in the Illinois and Western Amateurs.  Sports remained a vital interest.  He always rooted for the Detroit Lions and revered Doak Walker.  Geography and trivia, music, especially jazz, and dancing amused him.

Memorial visitation will be held Friday, June 4th from 10:00 until the memorial service at 11:30 at Garden Baptist Church, 1725 South Raceway Road, Indianapolis.

In Rockford, IL, memorial visitation will be held Friday, June 18th from 10:00 until the memorial service at 11:30 at Second First Church, 318 North Church Street.
