David E. Regenstrief

July 16, 1941 — June 3, 2023

Indianapolis

David Elliot Regenstrief, born on 49th Street, passed away less than 10 miles from his boyhood home in the only city he ever lived, at the age of 81, on Saturday, June 3, 2023.

Outside of his military service, David lived exclusively in Indianapolis, where he witnessed the city he loved transition from a small town into a metropolis of sports teams (he was one of the first Colts ticket owners), skyscrapers and a sprawling Jewish community.  He earned his BS from Indiana University where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity.

David wore many hats including serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, President of Congregation Beth-El Zedeck and Jewish Children and Family Services of the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis.  He and his uncles owned and ran Regens Bakery on the southside.  But most importantly he was known as a brother, husband, dad and Zayde.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Molly and Sigmund, and sister, Sandra.  David is survived by his wife of 60 years, Pearl; sister, Marcia; three children -- Andrea (Alan), Leigh (Jeffrey), Matt, seven grandchildren, Shayna (Aaron), Julia (Brent), Rebecca, Jessica, Adam, Maddie, Alex and great grandson Joey as well as many nieces, nephews and countless other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Mortuary, 11411 N. Michigan Road, at 1 pm.  It will be Livestreamed here .  Burial will follow at Beth-El Zedeck North Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Sandra Regenstrief Lipp Early Childhood Fund at Congregation Beth-El Zedeck.  Shiva will be held at the Meltzer residence on Sunday, June 11, following interment; Monday, June 12 and Tuesday, June 13, from 5 to 8 pm.

May his memory be for a blessing.
