Clyde Waltz Hochstedler

Indianapolis -- Clyde Waltz Hochstedler died on March 5, 2021 at St. Vincent’s Hospice after a brief illness. He was born on May 18, 1924 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The youngest of three sons of a Methodist minister, Clyde grew up in a series of small towns in northern Indiana. After serving his country in Europe during World War II, Clyde fell in love with and married Frances (Jo) Pickett, graduated from Purdue University with a major in Physics, and began his career as a mathematics teacher. He completed his Master’s in Education at Butler University. In addition to other positions, he was head of the Math Department at two Indianapolis public high schools. Upon retiring from IPS, Clyde continued to teach at IUPUI for several years.

A devoted family man, Clyde loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family. He had a beautiful singing voice and participated in choirs at church and at Robin Run Village, where he lived his last 23 years after Jo’s passing. Clyde was a dedicated Boilermaker and Bulldog fan and enjoyed cheering on all the local sports teams. He imparted that enthusiasm to his children and grandchildren.

Clyde was a lifelong Methodist and a faithful member of North United Methodist Church for the last 55 years of his life.

Clyde was predeceased by his wife Jo; his parents, Jesse O. and Ruth M. Hochstedler; and brothers Lee and Richard.  He is survived by his children Sarah Nemecek (Gary Chavers) and David Hochstedler (Beth Forbes), and by grandchildren Aaron (Jennifer) and Eliot (Alysse) Nemecek and Melissa Chavers, and greatgrandchildren Jackson, Lily, Alexander, and Eli Nemecek.

The family expresses their gratitude to the staff at Robin Run Assisted Living, who cared for him during the past year.

Services will be held at North United Methodist Church at a future date.
