Thomas was born on April 26, 1948 in East Chicago, Indiana and passed away on December 26, 2024 in Indianapolis. He was the oldest son of Floyd and Geraldine (Andrews) Houdasheldt, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a younger brother, Timothy Jay. He is survived by two sisters, Luanne Gray of Merrillville, Indiana and Dawn McNulty of Valparaiso, Indiana. He is also survived by three nieces, Cara, Elizabeth and Melissa; and eleven great-nieces and nephews.

Thomas dedicated a significant portion of his life to teaching in the Indianapolis Public Schools and the Indiana School for the Blind. He earned a Bachelors degree in education at Indiana State University and a Masters degree in education at Butler University. He was a dedicated teacher and loved children including those in his family, those he taught, and those he met through friends and neighbors.

Prior to attending college, Thomas served in the United States Army as a mechanic from 1968-1971 and was Honorably Discharged.

He married Sherri Frances Berger on December 18, 1976 and they resided in Indianapolis. Tom was a devoted family man who doted on his beloved wife, Sherri. They remained inseparable throughout their 49 years of married life. Tom was a talented mechanic, draftsman, and wood worker. He loved his pet dogs, his boat, and many years of trips to Minnesota to the family fishing cabin with his wife and his parents. Tom was a funny, kindhearted, loving friend and family member who was cherished by friends and family, and above all by his beloved Sherri. He is missed every day by those who loved him.

A graveside service will be held to honor Tom's life and the life of his beloved Sherri at 12 pM EST on Sunday, May 18, 2025 at Indianapolis Hebrew Cemetery North in Westfield, Indiana. As we reflect on the life of Thomas Dale Houdasheldt, we celebrate a life full of contributions to others, love of life, and joy in everyday things. The service will be followed by a luncheon to honor the memory of Tom and Sherri at Seasons 52, 8650 Keystone Crossing, Indianapolis 46240.
