Sylvia Foster

94, passed away Friday, September 25, 2026, at IU North Hospital, Carmel, Indiana. She was born in The Bronx, New York, to the late Pearl and Harry Eisenstein. She graduated with a bachelor of arts from Brooklyn College and later went back to school and received a masters degree in elementary education from Oakland University. Sylvia was a devoted wife of nearly 64 years to her husband Herman who preceded her in death in 2015. Sylvia was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She appreciated travel, music, literature, theater, movies and card games.

Sylvia adored children, not only her own but also her students. Sylvia bragged nonstop about her grandkids and great grandkids and attended their musical, theatrical and sporting events. She taught preschool and kindergarten classes for approximately 20 years at the Hillel Day School and the Echo Park Learning Center in Farmington, Michigan.

Sylvia lived a long and beautiful life and was able to stay independent until the day she died. She resided in an apartment at The Stratford in Carmel, Indiana, where she enjoyed sharing meals, playing Canasta and watching classic movies with her friends.

She is survived by her daughters, Ellen Foster Curtis (Dave Curtis) and Rhea McDonald (John); sons, Robert Foster (Cindy) and David Foster (Bonnie); brother, Melvin Eisenstein (Rita) and sister Barbara Chiarello (Richard). She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Brian Curtis (Allison), Greg Curtis (Amanda), Daniel McDonald (Tammy Mitchell), Ryan McDonald (Michelle), Kevin McDonald (Lily), Rachel Foster, Michael Foster, Andrew Foster, Molly Foster and Allison Foster; as well as her great grandchildren, Levi McDonald, Oliver McDonald, Frederick McDonald, Louis McDonald and Oliver Curtis; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Sylvia’s family would like to thank the kind people at The Stratford and the loving help she received from the caregivers at Live Long Well Care.

Services will be held at Aaron Ruben Nelson Mortuary, 11411 North Michigan Road, on Monday, September 28, 2026 at 2 p.m. with burial to follow at IHC North Cemetery in Westfield, Indiana. 

 In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Jewish National Fund jnf.org or the general fund at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation ihcindy.org.
