Sherri Frances (Berger) Houdasheldt was born on April 23, 1951, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Harold Berger and Emily (Carbone) Berger. Both parents preceded her in death, as did two brothers, Bruce and Mark. Sherri passed away on February 27, 2025, just two months after her husband, Thomas. She married Thomas Houdasheldt on December 18, 1976, in Indianapolis. Sherri grew up in Indianapolis with many cousins and attended the Indiana School for the Blind. Following high school, she attended Indiana State University, where she earned a degree in music with a specialization in piano. She read braille fluently not only for reading but also for her music.
Sherri was always relied upon to play the piano at family gatherings. She also performed with the Indy Singers, singing soprano and providing piano accompaniment. They performed popular music for years at community events all around the Indianapolis area. She also played the piano at many weddings over the years, performing popular, religious, and classical pieces. Sherri was a kind and gentle spirit who cherished her family and friends. She was sweet and kind to everyone, never speaking a harsh word. She loved and was loved by her mother-in-law, who considered her a third daughter. Sherri is survived by two sisters-in-law, Luanne Gray of Merrillville, Indiana, and Dawn McNulty of Valparaiso, Indiana, three nieces, Melissa, Elizabeth, and Cara, and eleven great-nieces and nephews. Sherri was devoted to her husband Thomas, and they shared many interests, including music, movies, and Indianapolis sports teams. She loved her pet dogs, whom she regarded as children, and loved her many fishing trips to northern Minnesota with Tom and his parents. She was always eager to go out in the boat and fish. She was deeply devoted to her husband, “Tommy,” and they remained inseparable throughout their 49-year marriage. Sherri is deeply missed by all who loved her, and her memory will always be a cherished treasure to them.
A graveside service will be held to honor Sherri’s life and her beloved “Tommy” at noon EST on Sunday, May 18, at Indianapolis Hebrew Cemetery North in Westfield, Indiana.
Rabbi Leon Olenick will officiate.
As we reflect on the life of Sherri Frances Houdasheldt, we will celebrate her gentleness and kind, loving spirit. The service will be followed by a luncheon to honor her memory, as well as the memory of her beloved “Tommy,” and their enduring love. The luncheon will be held at Seasons 52 at 8650 Keystone Crossing, Indianapolis, Indiana 46240.
