Richard Lee "Dick" Haneline

June 3, 1944 — July 16, 2023

Noblesville

Richard Lee “Dick” Haneline, beloved father, brother, uncle and poppa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 16th, 2023 at the age of 79 in Carmel, Indiana.

Dick and Wanda Haneline were married in 1966 and lived in over 14 cities together during their 57 year marriage.  In 2008 they moved to Noblesville, Indiana, which they have called home for the past 15 years.

Dick was the eldest of eight children, born on June 3rd, 1944 to Elmer and Mildred Haneline in Columbus, Ohio. Always a hard worker and an athlete, his first jobs in grade school included a paper route and working in a greenhouse.  In 1962, he graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School and was recruited to play football at Indiana University. As #67, Dick played defensive linebacker from 1962-1966. In 1967, he earned a Bachelor's of Science degree and took his first job as a physical education teacher in Gary, Indiana. After teaching, Dick went on to lead a long and successful career as an executive in the insurance industry.

Wanda was Dick’s first love, but IU football and golf were close seconds. As an IU fan, Dick had a collection of over 40 color coordinated IU baseball hats.  He attended many games and shared a Haneline Family “Old Brass Spittoon” with his son and daughter-in-law for the IU vs Michigan State game each fall.  He leaves us very proud of IU’s win this past season.

Dick was also a competitive golfer who played actively until the week before his death.  He had the pleasure of playing, walking and rating wonderful courses.  Ever the gadget-guy, he taught both his children the importance of having the right equipment for the game.  He was a fantastic shopper and enjoyed continually updating his golf wardrobe along with his clubs and other golf gadgets.

In a word, Dick was charismatic. No matter who you were; young or old, a long time friend or a new acquaintance, Dick had a way of connecting with people that made you feel special.  That’s why he always “knew a guy,” for anything you needed.  Because he really did know a guy, or a gal.  People he’d made that special connection with doing business or just talking to always remembered Dick Haneline.

Dick was passionate about helping the people in his life. Family meant everything to him. With little to no role model for how to build a successful family, he made it his life’s work and took immense joy in the role he was able to play in the lives of the people he loved.

May his memory live on forever in your heart.
