Richard L. Probst of Center Grove, IN (Formerly of West Palm Beach, FL)
March 4, 1942-August 27, 2025
On August 27, 2025, Richard L. Probst, "Dick," was greeted in heaven by his loving wife of thirty years, Carole Schermer. We are certain she was there to serve him his favorite Arnold Palmer iced tea, along with a "honey-do list" in hand.
He led a courageous fight against cancer, but that never stopped him from always smiling and sending funny and sometimes accidental text messages to family and friends, even up until the very end.
Dick had an illustrious career at Methodist Hospital and Jupiter Medical Center (FL). He would say he served "2 years and 1 day" in the Vietnam War, stationed in Greenland, as well as a quick stint in Vietnam. He received a wonderful Veterans award for his years of service in the Army, exactly one week before his passing.
He and his wife Carole, lived a great life in West Palm Beach, FL and moved back to their home state of Indiana right before the Pandemic.
For decades they enjoyed their annual cruise which they would go the same two weeks every year. Dick was once very active kayaking in the Intracoastal waterways, riding his bike around Riverwalk (where they lived for 30 years) as well as volunteering his time to be a part of their community's security team.
Dick was always very thoughtful making sure he brought candy to the staff at his various doctor's appointments. Also, it was lovingly well known that Dick had a flashlight fetish; he made sure family members always had flashlights on hand and he would even engrave their names on each of one them.
His family will remind themselves of a quote that he would share with many of us…”Don’t be sad because I’m gone; be happy because I lived.” Dick will always be in our hearts.
Dick is survived by his son, Michael Probst (Misty), his daughter, Kelly Probst (Fiancé Tom), his stepdaughter, Shana Quebe (Deron), his stepson, Craig Schermer (Mary), and two biological grandsons and a great-granddaughter, as well as two step-grandsons and a golden doodle grand-dog named Elroy.
It was his wish to be cremated with no funeral service. Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Funeral Home will be handling his wishes.
A very heartfelt thank you to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana & Aspen Trace. It was a team effort to make sure that Dick was comfortable and not in pain during his final weeks of life.
A sincere thank you to Senior Helpers and to our caregiver, Miss Donna. She always provided Dick with comfort and assistance during the last six months of his life.
A special shout-out to his incredible neighbors, John and Sheri, for always bringing him home-cooked meals and helping out on a weekly basis. Also, a big thank you to Lynnette, who would always make sure he had a clean home and would often bring him his favorite Papa John’s pizza.
