Neil H. Levine

January 4, 1945 — November 28, 2025

Indianapolis

Dr. Neil Harvey Levine passed away at Community North Heart Hospital on Friday, November 28, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on January 4, 1945, the second son of Charles and Marcia Levine, at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.

In June 1968, he married fellow medical student Louise Richman. They met the day before classes began at SUNY Downstate Medical School, started dating within the first week, and were married before graduating together in 1970. They went on to have two sons, Michael and Jonathan.

As a child, Neil's family moved to Valley Stream, Long Island in 1951, where he later graduated from Valley Stream Central High School in 1962. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965 and then returned to Brooklyn for medical school at SUNY Downstate under the Berry Plann. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at SUNY Downstate, Kings County Hospital, and the Brooklyn VA, where he cared for war veterans and military personnel. He served as Chief Resident in Orthopedic Surgery in the period immediately following the Vietnam War.

After his training, Neil entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Commissioned as a Major, he served for two years at Hawley Army Hospital at Fort Benjamin Harrison, which brought his young family to Indianapolis, Indiana.

Following his military service, Neil established a private orthopedic practice at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville. In 1980, he joined a group practice at Winona Hospital, becoming a full partner within the year. When his partners retired in 1989, he returned to solo practice. In the final 20 years of his career, he specialized in medical-legal work, serving as an expert witness, conducting independent medical exams and record reviews, and providing courtroom testimony.

Neil was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Marcia Levine; his wife of 47 years, Dr. Louise R. Levine; and beloved pets dogs Skippy and Koda, and cats Tinkerbell, Oliver, Cleo, and Patches.

He is survived by his sons, Michael (Melissa) and Jonathan (Angela); granddaughters Danielle, Meredith, and Charlotte; his brother, Laurence Levine; sisters-in-law Edith Levine and Florence Richman; nephew Andrew Richman (Diane); and additional relatives Judy Wittenberg, Debra Levine, and Rebecca Levine. He is also survived by his partner, Joanne Bates.

Neil was an avid collector of art and sports memorabilia. He was a lifelong fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers and, after their move, a dedicated New York Mets supporter. He treasured his friendships with his running group and found great joy in travel.
