Nathaniel "Nat" Dunne Koenig

May 8, 1977 — February 4, 2023

Zionsville

Nathaniel “Nat” Dunne Koenig, 45, of Zionsville, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on February 4, 2023.  He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Linda and Richard Koenig on Mother’s Day, May 8, 1977.  He grew up in Carmel, Indiana with his brother and sister, playing a variety of sports, having fun with neighborhood and school friends, and finding a little mischief along the way.  He attended Mohawk Trails Elementary and Clay Junior High before moving to Zionsville where he completed high school at Zionsville Community High, class of 1995.

Nat attended classes at University of Indianapolis and then Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis while working part-time as a framing carpenter, a job he first worked while in high school.  In 2000, Nat transferred to Purdue University in West Lafayette as a full-time student.  He then returned to working as a framing carpenter in 2004 with the same small, tight-knit crew he started out with originally, in Lebanon, Indiana, constructing custom homes and residential buildings.

Nat married Christine “Chrissy” Renee Irwin on September 24th, 2005.  They settled in Zionsville, Indiana and welcomed daughter Olivia McIntyre on February 18, 2011 and son Mitchel Irwin on April 11, 2013.

In 2008, Nat moved away briefly from his framing craft to work for Toltest as an electrical apprentice, which was then followed by brief stints as a stay-at-home dad and then work at Amazon as a dock coordinator in 2013.  In 2014, he started a job with the Town of Zionsville as a technician for the Street Division.  He was promoted to Team Lead on January 1, 2023.

Nat’s passions were abundant.  He was highly skilled with his hands and could fix anything, a real  problem-solver, so much like his dad.  Music ran through his blood.  He became an accomplished self-taught acoustic guitarist, a frequent hobby outside of work and a talent he would share during family outings.  Like his mom, he had a true love for cooking, and over the years mastered the use of his grill and smoker.  Crazy for the outdoors and camping, Nat and the family spent many weekends and longer vacations in their fifth-wheel trailer “Sylvester”, exploring an impressive number of state parks throughout the Midwest.  In addition to the camper, he was also devoted to his Harley, a 1995 Heritage Softail.  Nat was a proud member of Zionsville’s American Legion Post 79 and a faithful supporter and volunteer of its yearly events, most distinctively the Cruzin’ 4 a Cure Ride to benefit childhood cancer research.  Smart, sensitive, and humble, he enjoyed a simple life, so giving of himself to all those lucky enough to have lived by him.

Nat is survived by wife Chrissy; children, Olivia (11) and Mitchel (9); father, Rick Koenig; brother Jason (Shawna) Koenig; sister Bryn (Shawn) Inman; nieces Rosie and Tate; nephews Ozzy and CJ; many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins; his legion family; and numerous dear friends, coworkers and neighbors.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 15th, 2023 at Zionsville Presbyterian Church (ZPC), 4775 W 116th Street, Zionsville, from 4-8pm.
