Myrtle Irene Treber

August 31, 1926 — September 23, 2023

Greentown

Myrtle Irene (Douglass) Treber, a long-time resident of Greentown, passed away September 23, 2023.

Myrtle was born August 31, 1926 in Richland Township, Grant County, Indiana, to Milo and Louie (Overman) Douglass.

Her husband of 53 years, Harry Treber, preceded her in death in 2004.

Also preceding her were her sister, Ruth Krueck, half-sister Edna Good, and half-brothers, Howard Douglass, Verlin Douglass, and Gifford Douglass.

She attended Converse High School, graduating in 1944, and went to work in Marion for Indiana Bell. She later attended Mather College in Cleveland.

Myrtle was a long-time member of Amboy Friends Church. She taught Sunday and Bible School for 40 years.  She served as an officer or member of multiple committees over the years. She was especially committed to the missionary and service projects.

She loved to travel, and she and Harry traveled extensively together, bringing their children along as the family grew.  When they became empty nesters, they continued to travel, especially enjoying Spanish-speaking areas, including Spain, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and  Mexico. The most extensive time was spent in Mexico where she spent a year with Harry managing the Casa de los Amigos (“Friends’ House”) a Quaker conference center in Mexico City.  Back home, she loved her job as a teachers’ assistant and helped children learn Spanish.

Always creative and staying busy, she loved gardening and all things nature, especially birds,  hummingbirds and butterflies. She loved quilting and she made many beautiful quilts, first for her children, then for her beloved grandchildren.  She loved working on family genealogy and she delighted in discovering new information that increased knowledge of our history. She enjoyed sharing her discoveries with her children and other family members and was proud when they too became interested in family history.

Survivors include six children, Jenny (Garry) Shepherd, Oak Ridge, NC, Thomas (Eglee) Treber, Decatur, GA, Charles (Susie) Treber, Saline, MI, David (Karen) Treber, Salisberry, MD, Daniel (Susan) Treber, Indianapolis,IN, and Carmen (Gary) Stark, Zionsville, IN. 15 grandchildren; Christopher, Aaron (Rachel)  and Gregory  (Robin) Shepherd, Tabitha, Hannah, Madeline, Holly and Aliza Treber, John and Samuel Treber, Amy, Jack and Quinn Treber, and Rebecca and Griffin Stark. 6 great-grandchildren;  Lucia and Charles Feeney, Carson and Lewis Shepherd, Theodore and Elliot Shepherd and many much-loved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
