Michael Scott Sommer

June 6, 1967 — June 19, 2025

Indianapolis

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Michael "Mike" Scott Sommer, a beloved figure whose life touched the hearts of many. Born on June 6, 1967, in Indianapolis, Michael brought light and kindness to the lives he encountered. He departed this world on June 19, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of generosity and love.

Mike's professional journey began as a financial planner with Mutual of New York and showcased his dedication and skill in guiding others toward financial wellness. He also worked as an independent insurance agent, co-owning Broad Ripple Insurance. Beyond the numbers, Mike was a respected soccer referee for the Carmel Dads' Club, where he demonstrated his passion for the sport and commitment to fostering teamwork and fair play among young athletes.

A proud alumnus of Ball State University and member of Beta Theta Pi, Mike earned his Bachelor's degree in finance and accounting, a testament to his hard work and intellectual pursuits. Yet, it was his character that truly defined him. Mike was incredibly giving of his time and talents, whether filling bird feeders, baiting hooks for friends, teaching soccer skills to young players or making time to support his cherished nieces, who were a true source of joy in his life.

His hobbies were a reflection of his love for life and nature. A Master Gardener and avid bird watcher, Mike found peace and joy among the natural beauty around him. He was not only passionate about nurturing plants but also deeply appreciated the small wonders of the world, often capturing them through the lens of his camera, with his binoculars close by. Soccer was dear to his heart, and his involvement with the German American Klub brought him much enjoyment, further enhancing the bonds of friendship he cherished. He loved a life of adverture and travel with family and friends, whether snow or water skiing, kayaking or camping for a long weekend.  He was a gifted cook, often taking the recipes and skills he learned from his mom and adding his own flair.

Mike, who lived in Carmel, was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and his faith guided his actions and enriched his relationships with those around him.

He is survived by his loving parents, Harry and Chris Sommer; his dear sister, Michelle Tarantino; his three beloved nieces, Alexa, Ella and Savannah; his loving partner, Erica Caplinger; and his beloved dog Sammi, each of whom carried a piece of his heart. They will forever hold his memory close and continue to honor the values he instilled in them.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on June 30, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at St. Elizabeth Seton, 10655 Haverstick Road, Carmel, IN 46033. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Elizabeth Seton the following morning, July 1, 2025, at 10:30 AM and friends and family are invited to stay for a luncheon at the church. Interment will be held privately at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church or the Carmel Dads' Club.

As we remember Mike, let us carry forward his spirit of generosity, his love for nature, and his unwavering commitment to uplifting those around him. He will be dearly missed, yet his toils in this world and the memories we share will forever illuminate our hearts.
