Mervyn Malcolm Copeland

Mervyn Malcolm Copeland, a beloved father, esteemed educator, and dedicated public servant, departed this world on April 8, 2024, at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and service.

Born in Skidmore, Missouri in 1940, Merv’s passion for mathematics was evident from a young age. After earning his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Northwest Missouri State University and a master’s degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia, he moved to Virginia and embarked on a fulfilling career as an educator. Merv’s commitment to shaping young minds extended beyond the classroom as he instilled in his students an appreciation for the beauty and importance of mathematics.

In addition to his contributions to education, Merv served his country with distinction as a dedicated civilian in the Department of the Army, working 30 years at the Pentagon. His dedication and expertise were instrumental in advancing initiatives for the nation’s defense, earning him the admiration and respect of colleagues and superiors.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Merv cherished every moment spent with his family. His kindness, intelligence, and unwavering integrity touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion, and intellectual curiosity that will continue to inspire generations to come.

He is survived by his daughters Ann Copeland and Lea (Scott) Bishop, grandchildren Matthew and Morgan Wolseley, former wife Patricia Copeland, stepson Dale (Jan) Dunn, and stepdaughters Cindy (Rick) Dadisman, and Faye Martina, along with a host of relatives and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts forever.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Copeland and Mary Katherine Gray Copeland, wife Thelma Dunn Copeland, sisters Marilyn (Larry) Riat and Margaret (Herb) Anderson, niece Robin Riat, and stepdaughter Denise (Mike) Powers.

In honoring Merv’s life and legacy, let us remember his steadfast dedication to family, education, and country, and strive to emulate the principles of kindness, service, and love that he so beautifully embodied.

Rest in peace, dear Mervyn. You will be deeply missed, but your spirit will live on in the countless lives you have touched.
