Mary Ellen (Gremelspacher) Spitznogle

Mary Ellen "Meg" Gremelspacher Spitznogle, born on January 24, 1940 in Logansport, Indiana peacefully passed away at home in Indianapolis, on January 6, 2024. She was the daughter of Leona Donohue and J. Donald Gremelspacher.

Meg dedicated her life to her family and community. Beloved by all, she is survived by her children, Nora Spitznogle, Beth (Troy) Portish, J.R. (Anna) Spitznogle, and Ann (Tim) Cothron; and grandchildren, Molly Spitznogle and John David Spitznogle.

Meg graduated from St. Agnes Academy, Indianapolis, in 1958 and attended St. Mary of the Woods College until her marriage to John Spitznogle in 1960. After her four children were in school, Meg finished her undergraduate degree at SMWC, and went on to earn graduate degrees from St. Meinrad School of Theology, Indiana University School of Social Work, and a doctorate from the Graduate Theological Foundation - including studies at Oxford University.

Throughout her career, Meg made a lasting impact with her work at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, St. Luke's Catholic Church, St. Elizabeth’s Home, Nurse-Midwives, St. Pius X Catholic Church, and her private counseling practice.

A compassionate soul and a pillar of strength, Meg will be remembered for her kindness, humility, generosity, humor, entertaining skills, and unwavering love. Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she impacted.

In addition to her children and grandchildren, Meg is survived by siblings, Ann Lowery and Phil Gremelspacher; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, John Gremelspacher, Con Gremelspacher, and Rita Zwergel.

To honor Meg, a visitation will be held at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 7575 Holliday Drive, Indianapolis, on Friday, January 12, 2024, from 9:30 - 11:30 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be follow at 11:30 AM in the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Sisters of Providence (Mission Advancement office, 1 Sisters of Providence, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, IN 47876) or the Southern Poverty Law Center (The Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104) as Meg was a firm believer in giving back to those in need.
