Marvin Mitchell, 88, passed away on July 30, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Indianapolis to Isaac ("Tuffy") Mitchell and Esther Meshlum Mitchell, Marvin was proud to call Indianapolis his lifelong home. He attended Shortridge High School, graduating in 1955, where he like to pretend he excelled as a student-athlete. He remained close friends with many of his classmates throughout his life and delighted in sharing stories of their athletic accomplishments and adventures together.

Marvin attended The Ohio State University, where he served as president of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. While attending Indiana University School of Law, he ventured into real estate, purchasing and managing properties, and served as an assistant to the Chief Justice of the Indiana Supreme Court. After graduating from law school in 1963, he embarked on an exceptional legal career spanning more than 60 years, continuing to practice until just weeks before his passing.

Throughout his distinguished career, Marvin argued cases before the Indiana Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and the Indiana Court of Appeals. He earned the respect of clients, judges, and fellow attorneys through his integrity, intellect, and tireless work ethic. He also believed deeply in giving back, donating hundreds of hours of pro bono legal services to individuals, synagogues, and numerous Jewish organizations throughout the community.

Marvin's commitment to the Jewish community was unwavering. He served as president of Congregation B'nai Torah and was actively involved with the Greater Jewish Federation of Indianapolis and Israel Bonds. He was instrumental in helping found the Hebrew Academy of Indianapolis, a legacy that continues to benefit generations of students and families. In recognition of his extraordinary leadership and service, he received numerous honors throughout his lifetime, including the L.L. Goodman Leadership Award from the Greater Jewish Federation of Indianapolis.

Although Marvin's professional and community accomplishments were many, those who knew him best will remember his generosity, loyalty, and genuine interest in others. He was always willing to offer his time, wisdom, and counsel to anyone who asked. He possessed a remarkable curiosity and was a lifelong learner, surrounding himself with books and building a beloved library filled with countless volumes he always looked forward to reading.

Above all else, Marvin cherished his family. He shared 59 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Susan, whom he met at the Jewish Community Center pool. Together they built a life filled with love and lifelong friendships, and an enduring commitment to family and Jewish values.

Marvin is survived by his devoted wife, Susan Delott Mitchell; his loving children, Liz Mitchell, Ira Mitchell, and Jenny Goodman (Jimmy); and his treasured granddaughters, Sophie Cannon, Emmie Cannon, Madeline Cannon, Ella Goodman, and Liv Goodman.

Marvin leaves behind an enduring legacy of integrity, generosity, leadership, and service. His family, friends, colleagues, and community are better because of the life he lived, and his memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Funeral services will be on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, 6501 N. Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46260.  Burial will follow in Indianapolis Hebrew Cemetery North.  Shiva will be held at the family home on Sunday and Monday from 4-7 PM with a minyon both evenings at 6:00 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation B'nai Torah, Etz Chaim Sephardic Congregation, or to the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation.
