Marjorie Anna Haynes Miller, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2026 in Indianapolis. She was born February 3, 1930 in Mt. Vernon, Indiana to Walter Samuel and Ruby (Collier) Haynes. A 1948 graduate of Reitz High School in Evansville, she received a BSN in Nursing from Deaconness Hospital and met Robert H. Miller at Evansville College through her brother-in-law, Chester Mahan. Marjorie and Bob were married on November 8, 1953 at his first pastorate in West Newton. They then served the South Conference of the United Methodist Church at Wheatland, Evansville, Oakland City, Scottsburg, Aurora, New Albany, Covington, and Lawrenceburg.
Marjorie was humble and compassionate. She put the Lord first in supporting her husband with his ministry and caring for her family and church members as her career. The saying, "once a nurse always a nurse" is true, but she primarily enjoyed her roles as a preacher's wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Marge loved to sing and could be heard singing hymns all hours of the day and night. Her family and loved ones were fortunate to experience the strong witness of her faith just by the way she lived her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Ruby Haynes; her husband, Robert Herman Miller; her sister, Dorothy Mahan; and her grandson, Nolan Miller. Marjorie is survived by son, David (Angela) Miller; daughter, Dorothy "Dot" Miller (Jim) Ward; grandsons, Justin Miller, Ben (Maggie) Miller, Joshua (Anne) Ward, Nathanial (Shelly) Ward, and Christopher (Brittany) Ward; and great-grandchildren, Quinn, Ansel, Brooklyn, Claire, Griffin, Adrienne, Gabe, Thomas and Timothy.
Grandma Marge especially enjoyed her retirement years with Bob. They retired to Covington, Indiana, in 1987 and then to Boyne Falls, Michigan, in 2003. They both enjoyed traveling across the U.S. in "Dolly", their vintage RV. In 2009, they moved to Crestwood Village West in Indianapolis. After Bob passed away the following year, Marge continued to live there for many years. After additional transitions, she enjoyed her final years in assisted living at Traditions of Solana, with a peaceful view of the White River and a bird feeder under her window, where she delighted in watching birds, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and even a few ducks.
A special thank you for the personal care she received through the years from the staff at Traditions of Solana, Dr. Mark O'Brien and the IU Health Grace Team, Grace at Home, and Luminary Hospice.
Services will be held November 21, 2026, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 6450 Allisonville Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46220. Friends and family are welcome to visit from 12:30 pm until the funeral service at 2 PM.
