Joyce Carringer-Turner, a mother, costume designer and loving friend passed away peacefully on November 12, 2024, in Indianapolis, Indiana, at the age of 91. Born on November 9, 1933, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Joyce was a beacon of kindness and love, whose life was woven intricately with the threads of artistry and community.
She built a life rich in creativity and service, first as a beloved yoga instructor for the Jewish Community Center, imparting not just physical wellness but a profound sense of tranquility and mindfulness to many, and then later in artistic creation. Joyce's yoga career took her may places, including a television studio which lead to a community theatre and then to a career as a professional costumer in both theatre and film. Joyce was a proud member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts (IATSE). She had the pleasure of working on Broadway national tours, motion pictures and with national recording artists. Later in life she volunteered at a soup kitchen, the Bread Bowl, feeding the hungry, while still occasionally adjusting costumes for national tours and major recording artists.
She is survived by her loving children, James, Dillion and Choya, as well as her extended family of daughters, sons and artistic colleagues. Her legacy will also be upheld by her brother, A.J. Sartin, who carries with him the warmth and memories of their shared childhood. Joyce was predeceased by her devoted husband, Dr. Leon Turner, her brother Charles Sartin and her beloved parents, Charles and Ruby Sartin.
