John James Sweeney

December 31, 1944 — January 31, 2026

John James Sweeney, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home in Carmel, IN on January 31, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on December 31, 1944, in Evanston, Illinois. John was a man of great accomplishments and a source of inspiration to his family and friends.

John’s educational journey was marked by his talent as a gifted athlete. He attended Rich East High School, where he excelled in sports and earned a college basketball scholarship. He began his studies at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming, before transferring to Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska, where he continued to nurture his athletic abilities.

Professionally, John dedicated his life to sales, establishing a successful career as a Salesman. He had a business, Latex Modifications Incorporated, a distributor for BASF and he also worked for Hydro-Technologies, Inc. John retired at 70, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and determination.

John was not only a businessman but also a passionate golfer and a long-time member of Broadmoor Country Club. His love for the game was reflected in his impressive record, achieving seven hole-in-ones throughout his golfing career, a testament to his skill and dedication to the sport.

Above all, John adored his family. He met Cathie in sixth grade and, even then, knew she was the one—telling her he was going to marry her. That childhood promise became a lifelong love, as they recently celebrated 60 years of marriage. He took immense pride in his five grandchildren, who brought him untold joy and happiness. His love for his family was evident in every aspect of his life.

John is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years, Catherine Bruno Sweeney; his children, Scott Sweeney, Shannon (Michael) Deganutti, Kelly (Angel) Morales and his five grandchildren, Dominic and Zachary Deganutti, Brooks, Maria, and Peter Morales; his siblings MaryAnne, Ginny, Paul, Kathy, Rosemary and Mike.

John's memory will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved him.

In remembrance of his brave five year successful fight against pancreatic cancer, memorial contributions may be made to PanCAN or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or Shriners Children's Hospitals.
