John Chomica, 88, of Carmel, Indiana, died peacefully Wednesday afternoon with family by his side.
John was born in Ontario, Canada in 1937 and emigrated to the United States in 1983. He worked briefly as a mechanic – a career which came in handy on more than one occasion with three children and their children – before launching a decades-long, highly successful insurance career. A performer at heart, John dabbled in community theater and had a deep and abiding love of musicals (with Les Misérables topping the list). He loved golf, Arnold Palmers, the Blue Jays (beat LA!), the Maple Leafs, and Coors Light (much to the chagrin of the true beer lovers in the family).
John was a beloved father and, if possible, an even more beloved grandfather. He was renowned for his foot rubs and his penchant for musical greeting cards, no matter the occasion. He coached his kids in soccer and hockey and tirelessly attended his grandkids’ recitals, performances, and sporting events – and sang high praise for each and every one, always with the biggest smile. John’s love for his family was endless. He was happiest with his children and their families around him, generously hosting twenty-five years of annual beach vacations for all of them (sand, aloe, and sunscreen will forever evoke fond memories of John).
John was preceded in death by his wife, Joan. He is survived by his children Christine (Robert) Squier, Catherine (Scott) Livingston, and John (Kim) Chomica; and his nine grandchildren, Jack, Emily, Adam, Rachael, Becca, Colleen, Will, Ellie, and Henry.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please donate to the American Heart Association or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
