Joanne Layton Bates was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on September 25, 1947, to Fred and Trudy Layton. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, and a devoted dog mom to her faithful good girl, Ruby.
She will be remembered for her strength, her style, her “just let me get my purse” willingness to go anywhere, the countless people she helped throughout her career as a social worker and therapist, and her wicked sense of humor that made everyone around her laugh.
She is survived by her daughters, Carly (Larry) Turow and Jessica Bates; her grandchildren, Martin, Frederick, and Julia Turow; and her brother, Robert (Karen) Layton. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A funeral service will be held at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, 6501 North Meridian Street, on Thursday, August 27th at 2 PM. Burial will follow in Freeman Green Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Purdue Hillel, the ACLU, or a charity of your choice.
