Indianapolis

Joan Weinberg Wolf passed away on April 19, 2024 in Carmel, Indiana.

Joan lived and celebrated beauty, art and culture throughout her long life in everything she did.

Joan was born on January 24, 1934 to Lillian Weinberg (nee Kroot) and Isadore Weinberg. She was raised in Madison, Indiana. Joan honored her parents, hometown and Jewish heritage in a book she commissioned about Jewish scrap business entrepreneurs entitled Bonds as Strong as Steel. She also contributed to the Ohio River scenic area in Madison and to the renovation of an historic mansion in the area.

After completing high school in Madison, where Joan was a majorette, she went on to study home economics/dietetics at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. More recently, Joan generously endowed Indiana University with a scholarship in Dietetics.

At age 16, Joan met her future husband, Walter E. Wolf, Jr. in Indianapolis after being introduced by her aunt. Joan and Walter married in 1955 and Joan remained devoted to Walter for all of their 68 years  together. The couple, after an army deployment in Germany, returned to Indianapolis and became the loving parents of four daughters, Janet (Andy) Bradtke, Marilyn Wilkinson, Judy (Daniel) Weiker and Susan (Frank)Wolf Impicciche. Joan was the proud grandmother of nine grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Joan and Walter traveled the world together and enjoyed many unique experiences. Joan was a great friend to many and saw her friends regularly through bridge club and garden club. Joan was a lady of undeniable style. She had an eye for beautiful clothes and loved to be well dressed wherever she went.

Joan was a patron of the arts and was an exceptional contributor to the community. Joan and Walter acquired an extensive collection of art including paintings and prints by many great masters. Much of the collection has been donated to the Indiana University Eskinazi Museum of Art in Bloomington, IN, and to the IMA Newfields. Joan volunteered with the IMA as a docent and served as an Alliance Board member. Joan also volunteered with or served on the boards of the Indiana Jewish Historical Society, Indiana Historical Society, Indianapolis Symphony North Group, People of Vision, Wing of the Indianapolis Ballet, the Indianapolis Opera Guild, and Girls’ Inc.. In 2017, Joan’s civic contributions were recognized when she received the Hoosier Legend Award.

Joan is survived by her husband Walter and her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
