Jeffrey Dean Tilton, 58, passed away on January 11, 2026, after a courageous battle with a brain tumor. Born on May 21, 1967, in Fargo, North Dakota, Jeff lived a life defined by service, humility, faith, and deep love for people across cultures and continents.
Jeff was a proud U.S. Army veteran, serving as a specialist and later continuing his commitment to public service throughout his life. He was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where his intellectual curiosity and sense of global responsibility took deeper root.
His calling led him far beyond home. Jeff worked and traveled extensively throughout Africa and the Middle East, dedicating decades to humanitarian and diplomatic service. He began his journey as a Peace Corps volunteer, later serving as a Foreign Service Officer with USAID, and ultimately working for refugee resettlement organizations. Wherever he was sent, Jeff built trust easily—listening first, serving quietly, and leading with compassion.
Above all titles and accomplishments, Jeff was a guide to many—a steady presence, a thoughtful counselor, and a friend to all. His faith was not something he spoke about loudly, but something he lived daily. He was a shining example of how to walk in the way of the Lord, meeting others with grace, dignity, and unwavering kindness.
In the same manner he lived, Jeff faced the end of his life with grace and courage. In his own words, he said he was “going home.”
Jeff is survived by his wife, Madeleine; his daughter, Rose Dione Tilton (Mamadou Diallo); his son, Augustine (Patrick) Tilton; and his parents, James and Judy Tilton. He is also survived by his siblings: sister Lisa Day (Mark Hannon); brother Brian Tilton (Erin); and many cherished members of his extended family.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Jolene Muscha (Vern).
Jeff’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched—across borders, across beliefs, and across generations. His life was a testament to service without fanfare, faith without judgment, and love without limits.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 7, at 2:00 PM at Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Mortuary, 11411 North Michigan Road, Zionsville, Indiana 46077.
