Jeanne Sacks Koplow
93, beloved mother, grandmother & aunt died May 18, 2014. Born in Indianapolis, on April 27, 1921, daughter of Emma & Max Sacks. Jeanne attended Shortridge High School, Indiana University where she was a chapter founder of the Sigma Delta Tau sorority, and graduated from Northwestern University in 1942 with a degree in Library Sciences.
Mourning their loss, her family is comforted that she is reunited with her husband of 59 years, Leonard S. Koplow who preceded her in death; her four-year old son, Jeffrey; her sisters, Esther Dock and Ida Ettinger, brother, Jerry Sacks, as well as her dear parents, Max and Emma Sacks.
Words describing Jeanne: congenial, witty, devoted and compassionate. Because of her wise counsel, dedication, sensitivity and humor, she was a caring confidant to many family members. Her stand out talent as a parody songwriter and poet was frequently expressed at anniversary or birthday parties. She spent hours tailoring songs or poems specifically capturing the finer qualities of family or friends being celebrated. She excelled at telling jokes and creating adorable shell creatures from shells collected on the Florida beach.
As the bookkeeper, cashier and glue to her husband's business, The Squire Shop, she coined the business's slogan: "Men's Wear That Women Admire and Men Desire." The Squire Shop, located at 38th & Meridian, closed in 1973.
In her younger years, she was a dramatic arts and elocution teacher participating in several Civic Community Theater productions. She was a 50-year member of Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Women, Congregation Beth-El Zedeck sisterhood, B'nai Brith Women and National Asthma (formerly CARIH: Children's Asthma Research Institute Hospital or "Denver Home,") where she served as treasurer for 17 years.
The family thanks Dr. Stephen Beck, the St. Vincent's Hospice staff and the loving, personal care Jeanne received from her many caregivers including Aretha, Caroline, Vanessa and especially Brenda.
Survivors include her daughter Michelle (Marvin) Hershenson; her grandchildren, Dr. Jared (Jessica) Hershenson of Silver Spring, MD, Evan (Kimberly) Hershenson of New York, NY, & Elyse Hershenson of New York, NY; five great-grandchildren, Samuel, Devorah, Aryeh, Leah & Gavriel; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
