Helen Margaret Martin passed away on August 21, 2026, at the age of 61. Born in Greensville, Pennsylvania, Helen grew up in Rensselaer, Indiana, surrounded by a loving family. It was there that the foundation was laid for the kindness, compassion, and deep devotion to family that would define her throughout her life.

Helen was truly a blueprint for a kind and selfless human being. She was a life force, carrying an inexplicable warmth and tenderness that could soften even the hardest of hearts. She loved fiercely, generously, and unconditionally. Those who had the pleasure of knowing her will tell you that she was a devoted mother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Her compassion extended to every living thing. In a world that can sometimes feel indifferent, Helen made sure to keep birdseed and cat food in her car, “just in case” she came across an animal that needed a little care. It was such a simple gesture, yet it captured so much of who she was: thoughtful, tenderhearted, wonderfully unique, and always looking for an opportunity to make life a little better for someone else. She was the most endearing enigma you could ever hope to meet, and she was deeply beloved and cherished by her family and friends.

It came as no surprise that Helen chose a life devoted to caring for others. She spent more than 20 years as a nurse and the last decade as a nurse practitioner. Caring for people was more than her profession; it was simply part of her nature. Through her work, her friendships, and the countless quiet acts of kindness that defined her life, Helen touched more hearts than she could ever have known.

Of all the roles Helen held, being a mother was among her most treasured. She filled her daughters’ childhood with love, laughter, imagination, and memories they will carry with them always—from fun nature walks together to decorating spooky Halloween crafts. She had a way of turning ordinary moments into something special, creating a childhood filled with the comfort of knowing they were deeply and completely loved.

Throughout her life, Helen built a community around herself not through grand gestures, but through kindness, compassion, humor, generosity, and an extraordinary capacity to love. The people whose lives she touched became part of that community, and the love and support they shared with Helen and her family are a testament to the life she lived.

Helen leaves behind her beloved daughters, Emily (Nick) and Rachel (Kylie); her siblings, Jerry (Lisa) Hughes, Susanne (Todd) Garmong, Cary (Donna) Hughes, Edwina (Jim) Henderson, and Roderick (Julie) Hughes; as well as cherished friends and extended family who loved and supported her immensely.

Helen was preceded in death by her loving parents, Jerry and Wendy Hughes, whose love and influence remained a part of her throughout her life.

Helen’s life cannot be measured simply by the years she lived, but by the love she gave so freely, the people she cared for, the animals she stopped to feed, the laughter she created, and the countless lives made gentler because she was part of them.

Her community will come together to celebrate her life in a private ceremony on August 25, 2026.

Helen was one of those rare souls who made kindness seem effortless and love feel limitless. She will be profoundly missed, forever cherished, and remembered in every act of tenderness and compassion carried forward in her name.
