Gregory K. Silver, beloved husband, father, grandfather, community leader and environmentalist, passed on February 9, 2026, in the loving arms of his family and friends. Greg was the proud son of Dr. David Silver – esteemed professor of history at Butler University - and Anita Cohen Silver. Greg’s environmental law practice and his appointment as federal bankruptcy trustee spanned over 40 years, and he was widely recognized as serving the profession with humility and fairness. A graduate of Shortridge High School (’64), Miami University (’68) and Indiana University School of Law (’72), Greg was elected to the Shortridge High School Hall of Fame, received a Sagamore of the Wabash, and was recognized as an Indiana Jewish Historical Society Legend. He was a member and Chair of the Marion County Green-Ways Committee for over 25 years. Greg ran as a Democrat for the Indiana State Senate and Indianapolis City County Council, and he and his dad could often be spotted on the campaign trail together. Greg helped establish the Falls of the Ohio National Wildlife Conservation Area and the federal expansion of the Indiana Dunes National Park, and he lobbied Congress to introduce the Acid Rain Control Act while working for the Sierra Club with Congressmen Lee Hamilton, Andy Jacobs Jr and Frank McCloskey. Greg was a passionate supporter of the World Wildlife Fund, the Nature Conservancy, and the Audubon Society. Greg could often be found on the weekends birding at Eagle Creek Park with his poodle Max and cheering on the Butler Bulldogs at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Most of all Greg will be fondly remembered as a mensch with a huge heart who wanted to leave the world a better place.
Greg is survived by his beloved wife Renny Ruekberg Silver and his loving children, Sara Silver-Lee (Craig Lee) and Scott Silver (Katelyn Jones), and his four grandchildren River Lee, Piper Lee, Issy Silver and Ramona Silver.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Aaron Ruben Nelson Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Sunday, February 15th at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation with a burial following at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation North Cemetery.
Contributions can be made in Greg’s memory to the Indianapolis KIWANIS Foundation, Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, Feed the Hungry, and The Amos Butler Audubon Society.
