Gerald H. "Jerry" Tarshes

Gerald H. "Jerry" Tarshes, 93, passed away on January 9, 2024 at his home in Carmel, Indiana from complications due to dementia. He was born on October 25, 1930 to Adolph and Esther (Arshopsky) Tarshes and was a lifelong resident of Indianapolis. He graduated from Shortridge High School, after three years, in 1947. Jerry attended Indiana University, graduating in 1950, after only three years with a degree in real estate. Immediately following graduation, he entered the real estate business. During that time Jerry also served as a First Lieutenant, in the Army Reserve, Quarter Master Corps. In 1955, he started Jerry Tarshes Co, Realtors. He served as president of that company until his retirement in 1987.

During his time in business, Jerry served as director, vice president, and president of the Indianapolis Real Estate Board, the forerunner of today's Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors (MIBOR). During his presidency, he served on Mayor Richard Lugar's Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee. He was recognized as “Realtor of the Year” by the Indianapolis Real Estate Board in 1973. Jerry also served as a director of the Realtor Foundation, as chairman of Northside Multiple Listing Association, and as chairman of Eastside Multiple Listing Association. He served the Indiana Association of Realtors, first as chairman of its 1970 convention in French Lick, and later as its treasurer.

Jerry was an avid golfer and fisherman, enjoying numerous fishing trips to Canada, as well as to Belize and Costa Rica. He was an owner of land and instrumental in its development in Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Lawrence, Marion (including Sherwood Forest and Sleepy Hollow subdivisions located on Indianapolis northside), Monroe, and Owen counties.

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife Joanne. Jerry is survived by his son David Tarshes (Debby Kerdeman), Seattle, Washington; his daughter Deb Catton (Steve), Indianapolis; grandson Will Catton (Emily), Chicago, Illinois; granddaughter Jamie Garlock (Reid), Indianapolis; great-granddaughter Izzy Catton; great-grandson Oliver Garlock; and sister Elaine Goldberg (Stan), Tucson, Arizona.

The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to the exceptional caregivers that provided the care Jerry needed and deserved, making it possible for him to remain at home during his final years– Helen Webster, Chaunte Calvert, Dawn Bell, Sherry Lewis, Teresa Chandler, LaNisha Frye and Marlys Webster, as well as to Paradigm Health for palliative and hospice care, especially Monica and Sarah.

Services for Jerry will be at Aaron-Ruben-Nelson (ARN) Mortuary, 11411 N. Michigan Road, Zionsville on Friday, January 12th at 2:00 with calling from 12:30 until 2:00.
