Eleanor Maurer

d. May 16, 2024

Life long Indianapolis resident

Eleanor Maurer, our wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, left us on Thursday, May 16, 2024. Eleanor was born and raised in Indianapolis to Elizabeth and Harry Adler. She met the love of her life, Sidney Maurer, at Shortridge High School, and they married at 18. They were married for 53 years until Sid’s passing in 2000.

They were always a team, doing everything together. Eleanor ran Atlas Supermarket at 54th and College Avenue alongside Sid for over 50 years. They loved their store and treated employees like family and customers like friends. Atlas was a neighborhood landmark and a symbol of their devotion to the Indianapolis community.

Eleanor was an amazing grandmother. On Sunday afternoons, she and Sid would take their grandchildren on fun adventures, including airplane trips to areas of interest.

Eleanor was known for her sunny disposition. Everyone who knew her loved her. She had a way of making people feel special. She was full of energy and loved being on the go. She got to meet and hold her first great-granddaughter, who was three months old. It brought her so much joy.

We want to thank Rachel Ayres, Emily Rockwood, and Bob Rogers for all their help and devotion to Eleanor over the past several years. They had lots of fun together, and El loved them dearly.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband Sidney, her sister Anne, her brothers Morris and Davey, and her son Morrie. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Jan Maurer, grandchildren Doug Maurer, Heather Maurer, and Whitney Kleymeyer (Evan), great-granddaughter Millie, dear friend Jackie Cohen, and son Gary.

The family will be holding a graveside service at Beth-El Zedeck North on Tuesday, May 21st, at 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Sidney Maurer Feed the Hungry Fund at Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, 600 West 70th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46260.

Arrangements entrusted to Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Funeral Home.
