Dr. Jitendra Mohan Kapoor, a revered professor of social work for 32 years at Indiana University and 22 years at Alabama A & M University, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2025.
His passing marks the end of a remarkable career shaped by deep commitment and lasting influence on the field. Born in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, India on December 29, 1934, Dr. Kapoor’s path from his early life in India to the classrooms of American universities reflects his drive to learn and his steady commitment to teaching.
Dr. Kapoor completed his combined baccalaureate degree in sociology, social work, and anthropology, as well as his master's degree and doctoral education at Lucknow University, India. He went on to pursue postdoctoral research at Michigan State University, further solidifying his expertise and allowing him to influence countless students who were fortunate enough to sit in his classes.
Dr. Kapoor was preceded in death by his wife, Kamal Tandon Kapoor, with whom he shared a long and significant life together. He is survived by his children, Sunny Kapoor (Jill) and Mona Youngblood (David), as well as Dr. and Mrs. Kapoor’s grandchildren—Kendall and Hayden Kapoor, and Jayne, Maggie, and Henry Youngblood—whose lives reflect his teachings and values, carrying forward his legacy of kindness and service.
A private family celebration of his life will be held to honor his memory.
