Dr. Alan Gregory Tavel

Indianapolis, IN — Dr. Alan Gregory Tavel, a devoted optometrist, beloved son, brother, uncle, and cherished friend, passed away on June 7, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, generosity, and deep connection to his community. Born and raised in Indianapolis, Alan remained a proud Hoosier throughout his life.

He attended Westlane Middle School and Park School for high school before earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Houston. He completed his Doctor of Optometry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, launching a professional journey that would touch the lives of tens of thousands of Hoosiers.

Alan spent his career at Dr. Tavel Family Eyecare, the practice founded by his father, Dr. David Tavel, in downtown Indianapolis in 1940. From its humble beginnings in the Claypool Hotel, the family-run business grew into a respected statewide network. Alan played a central role in that growth alongside his family, always prioritizing exceptional care and meaningful patient relationships. Many Hoosiers fondly recall their visits with Dr. Tavel, remembered for his gentle demeanor, sharp insight, quick humor, and genuine warmth.

Alan was the kind of person who gave freely of himself—quietly and generously. He was deeply independent and never wanted to impose on others, yet he was always the first to offer help, often before it was even requested. Whether it was showing up with an unexpected gift or offering his steady presence, Alan gave without hesitation or fanfare. He was known for bringing sweets to the office—usually a box of chocolates or his favorite pastries—adding a moment of joy to his colleagues' day. His sweet tooth and even sweeter personality became part of his signature.

Beyond optometry, Alan lived a full and vibrant life. He was an avid golfer, a passionate backgammon player, and a Certified Life Master in bridge—an achievement he earned by age 36. He appreciated life’s pleasures, including fine wine, good cigars, lively game nights, and spirited sports discussions. A lifelong baseball fan, his love of the game began in childhood through collecting baseball cards. He followed the sport with deep knowledge and enthusiasm and, while especially fond of the Chicago Cubs, he enjoyed the game in its entirety.

He is survived by his brothers, Dr. Larry S. Tavel (Sandi) and R. J. Tavel; and by five devoted nieces:

  • Mollie Tavel (Josh Kaback) and their son

  • Doni Tavel (Zack Fox) and their daughter

  • Lauren Tavel (Derek Fohrman)

  • Amy Tavel

  • Alison Tavel (Matt Musty)

Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. David Tavel and Kitty Tavel, and by his brother, Donald L. Tavel.

Alan will be remembered for his kind heart, his generous spirit, his thoughtful presence, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.
