Daniel "Dan" Richard Kelley

Daniel “Dan” Richard Kelley,

78, passed away September 24, 2023 in Carmel, IN. He was born to the late Daniel Richard Kelley, Sr. and Elizabeth McCafferty Kelley on December 31, 1944 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Dan honorably served in the United States Marines before becoming a teacher.  He attended Catholic University in Ponce, Puerto Rico where he studied literature and Spanish.  He had a gift for languages having perfected Vietnamese, Bru and Spanish and studied Italian, French and Thai.

Dan worked as an English teacher in Puerto Rico and then as an ESL teacher in Illinois.  He enjoyed doing voluntary and missionary work in Spanish speaking countries as well as in Vietnam where he had originally served in the military.  He will always be remembered for his quiet presence and willingness to help others.

He is survived by his children, Florence (Darrin) Belcher and Michael (Kristina) Kelley; grandchildren, Antonio Belcher, Haley Kelley, Sofia Belcher and Isabella Kelley; and the family pets Lily, Wrigley and Ivy. Dan was preceded in death by his sister, Pat Kelley Gregore.

A memorial service will be held at Aaron Ruben Nelson Mortuary, 11411 North Michigan Rd, on Saturday September 30th, 2023 at 2PM, with visitation prior to the services from 12 - 2PM.  Friends are welcome to visit. Memorial contributions may be made to The Humane Society of IN as he always had a special connection with family pets, especially his beloved Lily.
