Carl F. Lutz passed away peacefully on August 5 at 86 years of age. A forever fan of the Lions and Spartans, Carl loved life as an avid do-it-yourselfer, gardener, world traveler, Michigan fruit picker, baker, and active church/choir member.
Carl was born on December 8, 1934, in Lansing, MI to Paul and Edmunda Lutz. He received a BS in Agriculture & Applied Science (Michigan State University, Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi) in ’56, a MS in Metallurgical Engineering (Carnegie Institute of Technology, Society of the Sigma XI) in ’59, and a PhD in Metallurgical Engineering (Gordon Foundation Graduate Fellow) in ‘60. It was there he met Vivian, the love of his life, and was married in ’59.
Carl served our country as an instructor at the US Air Force Academy, CO. After his service, they planted roots in Rapid City, SD where he was the Dean of Engineering (School of Mines & Technology), they later moved to Indianapolis where he became Deputy Commissioner of Higher Ed before finding his most rewarding position as VP/Dean for Region 2 and VP/Chancellor for Region 2 & 5 (Ivy Tech State College) where he was intricately involved in the new South Bend Ivy Tech Facility. He retired in 2000 as VP Emeritus of Ivy Tech with rank and title of Sagamore of the Wabash for his work in Education in Indiana.
Carl was reunited in death with his wife of 51 years, loving parents and brother Ralph. He is survived by his son Tim (Terry), daughter Beth (Pat), and grandchildren, Mitchel, Lauren (Daniel), Channing, Jennifer (Brett), Taylor, and great grandchildren Nora, Emma, Penelope and Hunter.
Visitation will be August 9th at 4:00 pm with service following at 5:00 pm at Zionsville Presbyterian Church, 4775 W. 116th Street. On Tuesday, August 10, 2021, Carl will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife, in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army.
