Bertha Benmour

Bertha Benmour, born on June 18, 1925 in Manhattan, New York, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2026, in Indianapolis, Indiana, at the age of 101. Her long life was a testament to resilience, commitment to family, and quiet strength, leaving an enduring legacy cherished by all who knew her. Bertha was the beloved daughter of Max and Anna Welicovsky, who both preceded her in death. From her earliest years in Manhattan, Bertha formed a deep connection to her roots, education, values, and family traditions that would guide her through a life spanning more than a century. She completed her high school education at age 16, setting out into the world during a time of immense change. She worked during WWII at the Western Electric Defense Plant in New York City helping to produce radio tubes sent to North Africa to be used by the US Signal Corps for their communication equipment. This work earned Bertha the WWII Army/Navy “E” Excellence Pin.

Bertha worked as a postal clerk with the US Postal Service for 21 years, where her diligence and steadfast sense of duty were recognized and appreciated by colleagues. Her work ethic and reliability became hallmarks not only of her career but of her everyday life. Family was central to Bertha’s world. She is survived by her devoted children, Maxine (Marnie Sayles) Benmour, Joel (Marcia) Benmour, Karen (Bill) Mervis, Gary (Queenie) Benmour, Cindy (Stu) Brandt and Eric Benmour; and her son-in-law, Milton Firestone; 8 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Each carries forward her loving spirit and the lessons she imparted through word and example. Bertha was also the loving mother of Linda Benmour, who preceded her in death. The love she gave her children was rooted in warmth, wisdom, and generosity, shaping future generations. Throughout her life, Bertha was known for her ability to bring family together, whether in quiet everyday moments or in times of celebration and remembrance. Her presence was a constant source of comfort; her wisdom and compassionate nature provided guidance and support in times of need. Those who knew Bertha will remember her gentle demeanor and unwavering integrity. Her life’s journey touched many, leaving a profound impact on her friends, family, and all who had the privilege of crossing her path. The fond memories she created will live in the hearts of her loved ones forever. A service honoring the life of Bertha Benmour will be held at Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Mortuary on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at 10:30 am with visitation one hour prior. All who wish to pay their respects and celebrate her memory are welcome. Burial will be private.
